Cafe le Chat is a little piece of Newtown

Posted: Tuesday, 22 June 2010, 11:50 AM

You will have to search out Cafe le Chat on the corner of Queen and Patrick Streets (down stairs), Campbelltown. For the complete experience, try to get there on a Saturday afternoon. A jazz trio play there every 2nd Saturday from 12pm to 3pm and owner Kerri Baxter is in the process of lining up a blues duo for the other Saturdays.

I happened to stumble over Cafe le Chat on one of those jazz trio Saturdays. Three cool old dudes played guitars in the corner. We were greeted by an eclectic mix of furniture with the best spots taken. I ordered a coffee and sat for a while absorbing the atmosphere... very cool.

Cafe le Chat offers clairvoyant readings five days a week, Margaret Deering, Kerryn Marshall and Di Smith are the readers. Not a fan... but I know plenty of you (women) are, so go check out your future. You might be about to win Lotto!

"Poetry readings will be happening down the track too," Kerri told me. This place is straight out of King Street, Newtown.  Cafe le Chat also sells retro and interesting collectable pieces for your home and contemporary art from local artists adorn the walls.

The coffee is by Voodoo, a small coffee roaster from Marrickville. Cafe le Chat carries a range of treats to accompany your coffee like: banana bread; choc chip bread; pear and raspberry bread; fruit and nut bread; apple and cinnamon bread; blueberry bread; raisin toast; brioche; cakes; biscuits. The cafe doesn't do lunches or dinner but Kerri assured me, "customers are welcome to bring in their lunch from elsewhere if they wish, I don't mind. It keeps things simple," she smiled.

Please support this cafe. Business owners like Kerri gamble on Queen Street. It is only with the support of 'normal people' that we will turn things around in the historic main street.
